Zayha turns 1!
Friday, June 8, 2007

Yesterday was Zayha’s first birthday. I’m so proud of and impressed by my little guy.  He’s sweet, adventurous, fearless.  He eats every food we put in front of him. He walks with ease, goes up and down steps by himself.  He loves books and baths. He’s a natural drummer.

For his birthday, we

Zayha’s beginning to “talk”, to try our speaking patterns and rhythms, although the sounds aren’t English yet.

He’s moving beyond mamamama and dadadadad into multisyllabic sounds.

In a lovely moment tonight both Jamie and I got to witness, Zayha noticed the iridescent dragonfly painted on his

This past weekend, we went to Seattle for NORWAC, an astrology conference.  For the first time, we stayed in the hotel instead of with Jake or Andy (although we got to go to Jake & Anne’s for dinner on Friday). It was just easier having the boo with us.

Of course, the baby captivated many of the

This past weekend marked the days Zayha walked more than he crawled.  All weekend long he toddled from place to place, and when he fell he’d get up again instead of crawling.

To cap off the occasion, when I was putting him to bed and we finished reading our book, he slid off my lap, walked over
Down stairs!
Saturday, May 12, 2007

Zayha’s been going up the stairs like a champ, and when he’d sit on his hands and knees at the top of the steps and stare down, you could tell he wanted to go down too, but not head first!

So, I showed him how to turn around feet first, slide his feet down the stairs, land on his knees, and

Zayha is growing so quickly! Literally...

Last month when we went to the naturopath, she determined that we weren’t feeding him enough - he hadn’t gained any weight between 8 & 10 months.  So, we started giving him Oatie-Os (oat-only cheerios), rice cakes, and an extra meal every day.  He’s put
Sleep Training
Monday, March 26, 2007

It’s now time to quit getting up multiple times throughout the night. He was breastfeeding at least twice, and waking up every few hours crying.

At one point he’d gotten down to just 1 or 2 awakenings/night, but when he started teething he got up constantly. Then, he began crying any time we put

All kinds of little somethings...

He loves opening and shutting doors & cabinets. Clearing everything out of the cabinets. Climbing in the laundry basket and throwing the clothes everywhere.

He keeps shutting himself into the hallway. I come up to the door and play “Knock knock - Who’s there? -
Cutting teeth AND first steps!
Monday, March 5, 2007

It’s two days before Zayha’s 9 month birthday, and he hit two milestones at once.

First, he’s cutting his first tooth! He’s got a slight fever and isn’t sleeping well. Crabby boy!

He’s always liked chewing our nose & chin as kisses. But now he’s got a little razor in his month, so that’s going
First bad cold, and eczema
Sunday, February 11, 2007

Even though his first fever was the day he turned 6 months, his first bad cold showed up for his 8 month birthday. He’s snotty, can’t sleep, crabby.

Here’s what our naturopath prescribed, for those of you with kids:

1) Vitamin C powder (not Emergen-C, which has sweeteners) - 50mg (a pinch) every

Tonight Zayha was on my lap chewing on his teething butterfly (no, no teeth yet), when he held it out to me!

It was the first time I’d seen him intentionally give me something.

I started gnawing on it while he held it. It made him laugh! It’s still rare that he finds things funny, and his giggle
Trip to Florida
Sunday, January 14, 2007

We went to Boca Raton, Florida for 2 weeks over New Year’s Eve.

Zayha got to go the beach several times! He and I took a few walks alone. At one point I let him crawl in the sand, which was adorable until he slipped and got a face full of sand. Fortunately he was wearing his sunglasses! I nursed
The Poop, The Whole Poop, and Nothing But the Poop

Warning! This post contains graphic pooping. Read only if you’re willing...

After he started eating solid food, it took a few days for his poops to follow suit.  It took 3 days for the first one. Then, after another 3 days, there was still nothing...

Christmas parties, Holiday parties, birthday parties!

On Saturday, MacPac had a Christmas party at the Hollywood Bowling Alley.  Nancy, Dwayne’s wife, was completely taken with Zayha. She carried him around for an hour, showed him the lights.

Zayha did great until Tom yelled in his ear...
First Solid Food, Water, and Sippy Cup
Monday, December 11, 2006

Now that Zayha’s 6 months old, it’s time for solid food!

It was really important to Jamie that Zayha’s first food not be from a jar. So we cooked up an acorn squash, mooshed it up, figured out how the high chair worked, and broke out a spoon...

He opened wide, and....swallowed it! Not too
First Standing Up!
Monday, December 4, 2006

I’d been concerned that Zayha was inchworming, but not truly crawling. Every so often I’d show him hand-knee-other hand-other knee.  He finally got it, and is really crawling!

Today, after unpacking our merchandise for Christmas, the office was full of boxes.

On a whim, I sat him in the box.

First Sitting Up!
Monday, November 27, 2006

This morning it occurred to me that Zayha’s been inchworming around, but not sitting up at all. With such strong abdominal muscles, he must be able to by now...

So when we woke up this morning, I propped him up on the changing table.

Lo and behold, he stayed that way!

First Rice Milk
Monday, November 27, 2006

Now that Zayha is almost 6 months old, crawling and pulling up all day long, I realized that the nutrition I could give him was no longer enough.

He needed water, and more vitamins...

It was time for Infant Formula as a supplement, and Rice Cereal too!

Jamie’s started giving ZIP at least one
First Tuck-in
Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Tonight at 10:00 Zayha woke up, an unusual occurrence. He wouldn’t go back to sleep, so I fed him. On the one hand, I didn’t want to him to nurse because I didn’t want him to get in the habit of waking up to eat in the middle of the night. On the other hand, he’s a skinny muscular baby, and I
Is he a Puppy?
Monday, November 20, 2006

We’ve been trying to decide if Zayha’s a puppy. His nose is always wet. He barks in his sleep. He gets around on all fours. He rolls over. He likes to lick your face.

But today we began to wonder if he’s Godzilla. For some reason he spent all day growling!

Zayha’s Party
Sunday, November 5, 2006

Today my parents threw an Open House so that all our family and friends could meet Zayha.

My Uncle Harmon, Cousins Sherri, Melissa, and Rachel came in from NJ, and my cousin Doug flew his wife and 3 kids in from New Hampshire just for the party!  Doug, if you’re reading this, you stole my heart
Atlantic City, NJ
Friday, November 3, 2006

Jamie and I decided to try our “hands” at a couple poker tournaments in Atlantic City.

My parents have a gorgeous condo on the sub-penthouse level right on the beach. So we have a place to stay, just 1 mile from the casinos. And Nana and Zaydie are, of course, awesome babysitters.

The Birth Story
WE DID IT!
Jamie and I are the parents of a little boy! Zachary Isayha Shmuel Katz Pollock (Zayha, ZIP) joined us on Wednesday 6/7/06 at 3:39 am in Portland OR. He was 7 lbs, 15 oz, 19 in.
